National Health Insurance
- All international students are required to enroll in insurance to prepare for unexpected events such as illnesses, injuries, or accidents, including death, during their study abroad period.
Additional insurance apart from the National Health Insurance may need to be verified by the students themselves.
- Foreigners who have stayed in South Korea for more than 6 months are automatically enrolled as National Health Insurance subscribers from July 16, 2019, and are entitled to the same health insurance benefits as South Korean citizens.
Eligibility
Those who have stayed in South Korea for more than 6 months and are not covered by the National Health Insurance.
Includes international students on D-2 visas, general training on D-4 visas, overseas Koreans on F-4 visas, and foreign nationals studying abroad.
Enrollment Process
- Enrollment is processed by the National Health Insurance Corporation without the need for separate reporting.
- When changing the registered residence (domicile) with the local administrative office, please ensure that the detailed address, including building and apartment numbers, is accurately reported to avoid any inconvenience due to non-delivery of mail.
Fee Reduction Information
Temporary relief of insurance premiums due to the mandatory application of health insurance for foreign students.
30% reduction in the average premium of 143,840 won, resulting in a fee of 71,920 won.
Payment Deadline
Pay the insurance premium for the following month by the 25th of each month in advance.
Payment Methods
Payment can be made through various methods including direct debit, virtual account, banks, electronic payment, National Health Insurance Corporation offices (credit card), and collection portals.
Applying for automatic debit or a virtual account makes premium payment and reimbursement more convenient.
Consequences of Non-Payment of Premiums
- Restriction on Health Insurance Benefits:
If the premium is not paid, health insurance benefits for medical services provided by healthcare providers will be limited from the 1st of the month following the payment deadline until full payment is made. - Visa-Related Consequences :
There may be disadvantages when applying for various residence permits, such as visa extensions, through the Ministry of Justice. - Non-Payment Measures :
If you fail to pay within the specified period after being urged to do so, legal collection actions may be taken against income, property, automobiles, deposits, etc.
Note : Medical expenses for non-reimbursable treatments such as dental and traditional Korean medicine, cosmetic procedures, pregnancy and childbirth-related expenses are not covered.
